New Orleans Is Fastest Growing City in U.S.

The population of New Orleans grew 8.2 percent in 2008, faster than any other large city in the U.S., according to the latest population estimates released by the U.S. Census Bureau. The city’s population was 311,853, up from 210,768 following Hurricane Katrina in 2006 but still below pre-hurricane level of 484,674 based on the 2000 Census.

Round Rock, Texas, located north of Austin, was the second-fastest growing large city in the nation in 2008 with an 8.16 percent increase in population. Cary, N.C., located west of Raleigh, Gilbert, Ariz., and McKinney, Texas, north of Dallas, rounded out the top five.

New York led the nation in the largest numerical increase in population between 2007 and 2008, adding more than 53,000 residents. Phoenix, Houston, Los Angeles and San Antonio rounded out the top five cities with the largest numerical increases in population.
